Update Pax Arctica ‘On the Shoulders of Shackleton’ Expedition 2014

Meanwhile, 100 years ago, Shackleton was feverishly preparing his Endurance expedition, the First Battle of the Marne in France was being fought and the German advance on Paris was halted.

100 years ago: Germany declares war on Russia (Aug 1). On Aug 4. Germany invades Belgium and the UK declares war on Germany. That same day Ernest Shackleton offers his ship (The Endurance) and crew to British government for war effort. On Aug 8, after Shackleton receives a one-word telegram from Winston Churchill at the British Admiralty ("Proceed"), The Endurance departs Plymouth for Antarctica…

Pax Arctica is pleased to announce the pre-launch of the 'On the Shoulders of Shackleton’ Expedition, South Georgia 2014.

The expedition will be led by Luc Hardy veteran adventurer, environmental advocate, author and member of the Explorers Club of New York.  Luc will embark in this journey with eight men and women from France, England and Switzerland, all coming from varied backgrounds: scientist, polar guide, professional adventurers, soldiers, sportsmen and cameraman.

The expedition will depart Ushuaia on Oct 9 and will return on Nov 15, 2014.

This Pax Arctica expedition has two main objectives:

• To retrace Shackleton’s 800-mile route between Elephant Island and the island of South Georgia (including climbing/trekking across the island as his group did), and
• To collect scientific data, including oceanographic (CO2, temperature, salinity, current, etc.) and fauna, flora and soil observations and samples.
